SkyGuard: aviation risk intelligence built into insurance

Traditional insurance measures and prices risk. SkyGuard was founded on the view that advanced aviation risk intelligence can also identify changing risk and help operators take corrective action, so that the insurer becomes a participant in safety rather than a spectator to loss.

The story

Conceived at Cranfield, nine years in development

The idea for SkyGuard took shape while Andre was analysing accident reports for his Cranfield thesis. The data showed that the factors driving general aviation accidents were visible in advance, in logbooks, operating profiles and environments, yet the insurance market was pricing on crude exposure proxies and learning about risk only after a claim. Underwriting discipline and flight data monitoring were each well understood; nobody had joined them.

Over the following years the risk assessment models were built into assessment software, tested against live underwriting, and extended with fleet telemetry. SkyGuard Global was introduced to the aviation insurance market in late 2025 as a combined aviation property-and-casualty and aircrew life insurer, with Andre as founder and chief executive, a non-executive chairman and chief actuary drawn from financial services and actuarial science, and a panel of international reinsurers.

As described in Andre's interview with World Airnews, the operating principle is to record everything and show the operator only what the next decision needs: three findings a month, each with a recommended action and a time frame, rather than thousands of parameters per flight.

Corporate disclosures

SkyGuard Insurance Ltd is incorporated and licensed in Anguilla; its licence class, regulatory status, products, availability by territory and reinsurance arrangements are described on SkyGuard's own website and in its regulatory disclosures, which take precedence over any summary here. Andre's personal professional services are separate from SkyGuard's insurance business, and this site does not offer or issue insurance.

What SkyGuard does differently

Six ideas that make the insurer part of the safety system

Aviation insurance product design

Hull and liability cover for aircraft and fleets alongside life and loss-of-licence cover for aircrew, designed as one view of an operator's risk rather than two unrelated policies.

Flight Data Monitoring

Fleet-wide telemetry compared against aircraft of the same type and operations of the same kind, so an outlier is recognised as one.

Dynamic risk assessment

Risk reassessed as operations change, with findings framed as where an operator departs from its own procedures, where it differs from its peers, and which differences are linked to accident risk.

Behaviour-based pricing

A "pay-as-you-fly, pay-how-you-fly" philosophy that links premium to how aircraft are actually operated and how risk is managed.

Artificial intelligence under supervision

Analytics and AI used to sort, compare and prioritise operational data, under direct, qualified human supervision and never as a replacement for the aviator's judgement.

Proactive safety

Monthly risk intelligence that gives operators a specific next step rather than a wall of exceedances.

Philosophy

“Insurance should anticipate, not just respond.”

Data becomes intelligence only when it is sorted, compared and prioritised for a decision. SkyGuard's risk reports answer three questions: where is the operator departing from its own procedures, where does it differ from the rest of the fleet, and which of those differences actually link to accident risk.
