Since 2010 Andre has worked in the aviation segment of the South African long-term insurance market, first as an adviser specialising in pilots and aircrew, then as a franchise principal, and since 2018 as the contracted Aviation Risk Specialist responsible for the aviation underwriting philosophy of South Africa’s largest life insurer, guidelines and requirements. He has presented that philosophy to international reinsurers and has investigated aviation claims on their behalf.
The underwriting discipline he applies has one organising idea: price the risk, not the exposure proxy. Hours flown per year, on their own, say little about whether a pilot will have an accident; recency, total experience, aircraft type, the nature of the operation and the environment, taken together, say a great deal. That idea became his advanced aviation risk assessment models and, in turn, the foundation of SkyGuard.
